Deep Dive: Saturday, October 17

Saturday, October 17 — What a Single Study Session Taught Me About How Students Actually Learn

It started with a message from a student at 9:47am on a Saturday. She was a JC2 student preparing for her Cambridge A-Level (Singapore syllabus) H2 Mathematics paper, and she was completely stuck on integration by parts. Not the mechanics of it — she could execute the formula. She just had no idea why it worked, and that gap was costing her every time a question came dressed up in unfamiliar clothes. That one session reminded me why subject-specific, first-principles teaching matters so much more than drilling past papers.

What follows is essentially a reconstruction of that Saturday — the concepts we covered, the moments that clicked, and the pedagogical logic behind each one. Whether you're sitting Cambridge A-Levels, the IB Diploma, IGCSE, AP Calculus, or working through first-year undergraduate mathematics, I think there's something here for you.

Start With First Principles — Every Single Time

Here's the thing about mathematics that most tuition centres in Singapore don't teach: the formula is never the lesson. The lesson is why the formula is true. Once you understand that, you can reconstruct the formula mid-exam if your memory slips. You can adapt it. You can spot when the examiner is testing the concept in a new wrapper.

Take integration by parts. Most students memorise: ∫u dv = uv − ∫v du. Fine. But where does it come from? It's literally just the product rule for differentiation, rearranged and integrated across both sides. That's it. The product rule says d(uv)/dx = u(dv/dx) + v(du/dx). Integrate both sides, and you've got integration by parts. Two minutes of first-principles thinking and suddenly the formula isn't a thing you memorise — it's a thing you understand.

I make every student I work with do this exercise at least once. Derive the formula themselves, from scratch. The look on their face when they realise it was sitting inside something they already knew is genuinely one of my favourite moments in tutoring.

Worked Example: Integration by Parts Done Properly

Let's say you're asked to find ∫x·eˣ dx. Classic H2 Maths question, also appears regularly in IB Analysis & Approaches HL and A-Level Maths (Edexcel/AQA/Cambridge).

Step 1: Choose u and dv intelligently. The LIATE rule helps here — Logarithmic, Inverse trig, Algebraic, Trigonometric, Exponential. Pick u from earlier in the list. Here, x is Algebraic and eˣ is Exponential, so set u = x and dv = eˣ dx.

Step 2: Differentiate and integrate. du = dx, and v = eˣ.

Step 3: Apply the formula. ∫x·eˣ dx = x·eˣ − ∫eˣ dx = x·eˣ − eˣ + C = eˣ(x − 1) + C.

Clean. Elegant. But here's what I always tell my students — don't just check your answer, verify the method. Differentiate your answer. If d/dx[eˣ(x − 1) + C] = eˣ(x − 1) + eˣ = x·eˣ, which is your original integrand. Method confirmed. That habit of verification is what separates A students from A* students in Cambridge marking.

Why So Many Students Get Stuck on Trigonometry (And How to Fix It)

After the integration session, we shifted to trigonometry — specifically, proving identities. And this is where I see students struggle most consistently, not just in H2 Maths but across IB Mathematics, IGCSE Additional Mathematics, and AP Calculus BC.

The mistake is always the same: students try to manipulate both sides simultaneously. You cannot do that. A proof isn't a game of ping-pong. You pick one side — almost always the more complex side — and you transform it until it matches the other. That's the discipline.

A non-obvious insight I've found genuinely useful: if you see a combination of sin and cos, and you're not sure what to do, convert everything to sin and cos first. It feels like a step backwards. It isn't. It reveals structure that compound identities obscure.

A Quick Trig Identity Worked Example

Prove: (1 − cos²θ)/sinθ = sinθ.

Start with the left-hand side. Recall the Pythagorean identity: sin²θ + cos²θ = 1, so 1 − cos²θ = sin²θ. Substitute: sin²θ/sinθ = sinθ. Done. The right-hand side is reached in one line once you know what to reach for. The whole skill is pattern recognition — and that comes from working through enough examples that your brain starts to categorise them.

The Common Pitfalls I See Every Week (Across Every Subject)

I want to go beyond maths for a moment, because that Saturday session eventually turned into a group call with four other students — covering economics, chemistry, and English Literature. And the pitfalls across all those subjects share a common ancestor.

In Economics (IB or Cambridge A-Level): Students define terms correctly but then never apply them to the specific context of the question. Examiner marking schemes in A-Level Economics explicitly reward contextualised analysis. Writing "demand will decrease" earns nothing. Writing "demand for private cars in Singapore will decrease given the Certificate of Entitlement system already constrains ownership" earns the mark.

In Chemistry: Organic reaction mechanisms are memorised but not understood directionally. Electrons move from areas of high density to low density — nucleophiles attack electrophiles, always. If you understand that one principle, you can reason through an unfamiliar mechanism rather than panicking because you haven't seen it before. That applies whether you're doing IB Chemistry HL, Cambridge A-Level Chemistry, or first-year undergraduate organic chemistry.

In English Literature: Students summarise instead of analyse. "The author uses the word 'dark' to describe the setting" is summary. "The repetition of 'dark' creates a semantic field of moral corruption that foreshadows the protagonist's eventual complicity" is analysis. The difference is whether you're describing what's there or explaining what it's doing.

If you're working through any of these challenges right now, it might be worth exploring our free study tools at the Learning Centre — there are concept breakdowns, worked examples, and subject-specific guides across all of these areas.

How to Build a Practice Strategy That Actually Sticks

Passive re-reading is the most popular study method among students and the least effective one. I've seen it hundreds of times — a student highlights their notes in four different colours, stares at them for ninety minutes, and feels productive. Then they open a past paper and go blank.

What works is retrieval practice — closing your notes and forcing yourself to reconstruct what you know. Every time you do this, your brain strengthens the neural pathway. It's uncomfortable. That discomfort is the learning happening.

For JC students in Singapore preparing for H2 Maths or H1 Maths, I recommend this structure: spend 20% of your time reading and understanding, and 80% doing problems under timed conditions. The SEAB A-Level examination is a time-pressured assessment. Knowing the content at leisure and executing it under pressure are completely different skills. Train the one you'll actually be examined on.

For IB students working towards their May or November examination session, past papers from the last six years are the single most valuable resource you have. Not because the questions repeat — they don't, exactly — but because the question types do. The IB DP Mathematics examiner has a relatively small repertoire of ways to test integration or statistical inference. Learn to recognise the type and your response time drops dramatically.

If you want structured, personalised support alongside your own practice, take a look at our tutoring plans — we work with students across Cambridge, IB, and IGCSE programmes at every level from GCSE through to university undergraduate.

One More Thing About That Saturday Session

By the time we wrapped up that morning, the student who'd messaged me about integration by parts had not only solved the original problem — she'd gone back and reworked three past paper questions she'd previously got wrong, using the same first-principles understanding. That's the shift. Not "I can do this type of question now" but "I understand why the method works, so I can handle whatever they throw at me."

That's what good teaching looks like. Not delivering content — building comprehension. And it doesn't happen in large lecture halls or by watching YouTube videos on 2x speed. It happens in focused, one-to-one or small-group settings where someone pushes back on your working and asks "but why does that step follow?"

If you're a JC student in Singapore, an IB Diploma candidate, or an IGCSE student who feels like you understand the material right up until the moment you sit down to a test — that gap is fixable. It's almost always a first-principles gap, not an intelligence gap. You can start your free 21-day trial and see what that kind of teaching feels like for yourself.

The session on October 17 was a Saturday. My student messaged me before 10am. She wasn't struggling — she was curious. That curiosity, properly directed, is genuinely all you need.
