Deep Dive: Wednesday, October 7
A/L, O/L, Cambridge, Edexcel — ඕනෑම exam board එකේ student කෙනෙක්ට, ඕනෑම subject එකක් ගැන ඒ uncertain feeling එක එනවා.
Thula Academy එකේ online tutoring sessions වලදී මම දකිනවා — Sri Lanka ජාතික A/L, O/L students ද, Cambridge CAIE ද, Edexcel IAL ද — හැමෝටම common issue එකක් තියෙනවා.
Differentiation.
ඔබ textbook read කරද්දී familiar feel වෙනවා, ඒකෙන් brain ට signal යනවා "මේකෙ done, move on" කියලා. ඒත් ඒ familiarity ≠ mastery.
මම always කියනවා මගේ students ලාට: "Close the book. Blank paper.
First Principles —
Organic Chemistry ගනිමු — nucleophilic substitution mechanism.
Economics කෙනෙකුට — AD-AS model diagram copy කරන්න හරි. ඒත් "2022 Sri Lanka economic crisis context එකේ AS curve shift වුණේ ඇයි, exactly?" Edexcel IAL Economics Unit 2 exam papers ගත්තොත්, evaluation marks ගන්නේ first principles level thinking ට.
Biology students ලාට — homeostasis diagram draw කරන්න කිව්වාම හරි, ඒත් negative feedback loop ඇත්ත life situation එකට apply කරන්නට ඇහුවොත් — ඒකයි gap එක visible වෙන්නේ.
Sri Lankan Exam Context — ජාතික A/L vs London A/L, Approach වෙනස් ද?
Sri Lanka ජාතික A/L (Combined Maths, Physics, Chemistry) students ලාට structured derivations ගොඩාක් important. Department of Examinations Sri Lanka past papers ගනිමු — 2019, 2020 Combined Maths papers ලිව්වොත්, pure derivation-based questions consistently marks 25-30% carry කරනවා. London A/L (Cambridge CAIE / Edexcel IAL) students
ඒ කියන්නේ, ජාතික A/L Physics student කෙනෙකු wave optics derive කරන්නට practice ගොඩාක් කරන්නෙ, Cambridge A Level Physics student කෙනෙකු practical-based data analysis skills build කරන්නෙ. Different priorities, different strategies — ඒත් underlying concept clarity — ඒක universal requirement.
Worked Examples —
Mathematics: Calculus — Integration by Parts
Step by step:
u = x → du = dx
dv = eˣ dx → v = eˣ
∫x·eˣ dx = x·eˣ − ∫eˣ dx = x·eˣ − eˣ + C = eˣ(x − 1) + C
ඒ final answer check කරන්නෙ differentiate කරලා original expression ආවොත් correct. ඒ habit — verify your answer — Cambridge Pure Mathematics, Edexcel Core Pure, ජාතික A/L Combined Maths — හැම exam board එකේම marking scheme ගත්තාම students lose කරන marks ගොඩාක් careless errors.
Chemistry: Organic Mechanisms — Electrophilic Addition
Alkene + HBr reaction. Students draw curly arrows wrong direction — ඒ common pitfall. Rule: electrons nucleophile ලා attack කරන direction — high electron density ඉඳලා low. π bond electrons attack කරනවා electrophile (H⁺) ට.
Cambridge A Level Chemistry (9701) Paper 4 ගනිමු — mechanism questions ලිව්වොත්, arrow direction wrong හෝ lone pair missing — ඒ alone 2-3 marks drop කරනවා. O/L Science context ගනිමු නම්, chemical bonding understanding ඒ level analysis කරන්නේ නෑ — ඒත් A/L level ට foundation build කරන්න O/L time ම ඒ habit form කරන්නට ඕනෑ.
Common Pitfalls — Students
Derive කරන්නෙ both sides sin²θ ෙකන් divide කරලා.
Cambridge A Level Physics examiner reports ගනිමු — 2022, 2023 both years "direction not stated" consistently appeared as a major loss-of-marks reason.
- Economics: Evaluation ළඟ opinions ලිවීම — "I think" ලිව්වාම marks නෑ. "Evidence suggests" / "In the context of Sri Lanka's supply-side constraints" — ඒ academic register use කිරීම A-grade ට essential.
Practice only helps if the habit is deliberate.
- Accounting: Double entry principle confused — debit/credit rules asset accounts සහ expense accounts ගනිමු — students mix up. ජාතික O/L Accounting, Cambridge IGCSE Accounting — both contexts ලිව්වොත් ඒ confusion consistent.
Practice Strategies — ඇත්ත Preparation Plan එකක්
Spaced Repetition — Memory Science
Forgetting curve — Hermann Ebbinghaus 1885 දී demonstrate කළා, ඔබ new material learn කළා 24 hours ඇතුළත review නොකළොත් ~70% ෙකළා නෑ. ඒ research today දනු valid. ඒකෙ practical implication: notes ලියලා file කරලා next week exam week ට peek කිරීම — ඒ approach work නෑ. Same material — day 1, day 3, day 7, day 14 — review. Boring? Effective? Absolutely.
Thula Academy Learning Centre ලා try our free study tools — spaced repetition-based revision resources, subject-specific practice questions, ජාතික A/L, O/L, Cambridge, Edexcel board-aligned materials — ඒවා ඇත්ත revision ට help කරනවා.
Past Papers — ඒවා Last Minute Tool නෙවෙයි
මම often දකිනවා — students past papers use කරන්නේ exam 2 weeks ළඟ. ඒ too late. Past papers ගත්තොත් ඒ diagnostic tool — ඔබේ gaps identify කරන. Cambridge A Level, Edexcel IAL, ජාතික A/L — ඕනෑම board ගනිමු, past papers systematically use කිරීම topic by topic — ඒ approach students grade significantly improve කරනවා.
A student Sri Lanka ජාතික A/L Combined Maths prepare කරද්දී TS (time series) ලා paper solve නොකරලා, chapter-wise questions practice කළොත්, exam paper format ළඟ panic වෙනවා. Paper structure familiar නොවීම — ඒ avoidable problem.
Online Tutoring — One-to-One Attention Matters
Classroom ලා 30-40 students, teacher ට individual doubt address කිරීමට time නෑ. ඒ reality Sri Lanka ශ්රේෂ්ඨ schools ලා ද, tuition classes ලා ද. Personal one-to-one attention — A-Level tutor online session ලා ලිසේ ඒ gap fill කරනවා. Thula Academy online tutor sessions ලිව්වොත් — subject expert, exam board specific, student pace ට adapt කරලා teach කිරීම — ඒ difference real. explore our tutoring plans — ජාතික O/L, A/L, Cambridge CAIE, Edexcel IAL subject combinations available.
Psychology, Sociology, Business Studies — Humanities ද Skip කරන්නේ නෑ
Science students ලා humanities underestimate කරනවා, ඒ mistake. Psychology A Level ගනිමු — Biopsychology, Cognition, Research Methods — ඒ content heavy. Edexcel A Level Psychology Paper 2 ගනිමු — research methods questions ලිව්වොත් statistics understanding (chi-square, Spearman's rank) ද need කරනවා. Literally, ඒ Psychology exam ලිව්වාම Maths ළඟ crossover.
Business Studies, Economics — Sri Lanka ජාතික A/L Commerce stream students ලාට, Accounting conceptual understanding — just entries memorize කිරීම A grade deliver නෑ. Real-world context — Sri Lanka import/export policy, exchange rate dynamics 2022 crisis — ඒ context use කළොත් evaluation answers standout කරනවා.
University Level — Undergraduate Preparation ද Start කරන්නෙ දැනමයි
A/L ඉවර කළ students ලා — university first year ළඟ Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, University Statistics, Organic Chemistry lab reports — ඒ subjects ලිව්වො
