8 Weeks Before Exams: The Strategy That Boosts Your Grade

Eight Weeks Out: What Your Exam Strategy Should Look Like Right Now

Eight weeks is a specific number. Not "plenty of time" and not "panic stations" — it's the window where the decisions you make this week will either compound beautifully or haunt you in the exam hall. I've worked with hundreds of students across Cambridge IGCSE, Edexcel IAL, and IB Diploma programmes — many of them at international schools across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah — and the ones who perform above their predicted grades almost always have one thing in common: they stopped studying subjects around this point and started studying exams. There's a difference, and it matters enormously.

So. Sunday, 6th September. Here's exactly what your strategy should look like from today.

First, Understand What Phase You're Actually In

Most students treat revision like a single continuous activity — read notes, do questions, repeat. But elite exam preparation has distinct phases, and confusing them is one of the most costly mistakes I see. Right now, at eight weeks out, you should be transitioning out of content consolidation and firmly into exam technique and diagnostic practice.

What does that mean in practice? It means your default study activity is no longer reading your textbook or watching explanation videos. Your default activity is now sitting down with past papers, mark schemes open alongside, and interrogating every mark you drop. Not just answering questions — interrogating your performance.

Think of it this way. A footballer doesn't spend the final weeks before a cup final learning new formations. They drill set pieces, analyse the opposition, and sharpen the things they already know. You are in that final preparation block. The content is largely there. Now you refine.

The Diagnostic Audit — Do This Today, Not Tomorrow

Before you write a single revision timetable, you need data. Real data, not vibes. Pull out your most recent mock exam or past paper attempt and do something most students never bother doing properly: categorise every mark you dropped.

I use a simple three-column system with my students. Column one: Knowledge gaps — you didn't know the content. Column two: Technique errors — you knew the content but answered the question wrong (misread the command word, didn't show working, ran out of time). Column three: Careless mistakes — you knew it, you could do it, but you rushed or misread. Most students assume their losses sit in column one. In my experience, for students at the B/A boundary, the majority of dropped marks live in columns two and three. That's actually good news — those are the most fixable.

This audit takes about forty-five minutes. It's the most valuable forty-five minutes of your entire revision calendar. Once you have it, your timetable writes itself — because now you're allocating time based on evidence, not anxiety. You can try our free study tools to help structure this kind of diagnostic process systematically.

How Cambridge CAIE, Edexcel IAL, and IB Diploma Students Should Approach This Differently

This is where I'll be specific, because the exam strategy genuinely differs depending on your board — and students at international schools in the United Arab Emirates typically sit one of three: Cambridge CAIE, Edexcel IAL, or the IB Diploma. Each rewards slightly different things.

Cambridge CAIE (IGCSE and A-Level)

Cambridge mark schemes are notably unforgiving about method marks when a final answer is wrong. But they're also very structured — the question paper almost always follows predictable patterns within each unit. Past paper practice here isn't just about content, it's about internalising the rhythm of how Cambridge sets questions. I always tell my students: do the last five years of papers for your subject in timed conditions, then do the five years before that without a timer but with the mark scheme visible. You'll start to see the question types repeat. That pattern recognition is worth more than any set of notes.

Edexcel IAL

Edexcel International A-Level papers — which are the qualification of choice at many British curriculum schools in Dubai and Abu Dhabi — tend to be slightly more formulaic in their higher-mark questions, which is both a gift and a trap. Students often over-prepare the structured parts and under-prepare the open-ended evaluation questions, particularly in subjects like Economics, Business Studies, and Psychology. If you're an Edexcel IAL student, pull up the examiner reports (not just the mark schemes) for the last three series. Examiners literally write down what students kept getting wrong. It's the closest thing to a cheat sheet you'll ever find.

IB Diploma

IB is its own beast. The sheer breadth — Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay, Internal Assessments, six subjects — means time management across the programme is a strategic exercise in itself. At this stage, your Internal Assessment components should be largely complete or submitted. If they're not, that needs to be your immediate priority, full stop, because IA marks are guaranteed marks. For the written exams, the IB rewards nuanced argument over correct recall, particularly in Group 3 and Group 4 subjects. Students who score 6s and 7s in IB History, Economics, or Biology aren't necessarily the most knowledgeable — they're the ones who have learned to construct a response that the mark scheme finds irresistible.

The Past Paper Practice Framework That Actually Works

Here's what I recommend for the next eight weeks, and I say this having seen this approach produce genuinely remarkable grade improvements in students who started off convinced they were going to fail.

  1. Weeks 1–3: One timed full paper per subject per week. Mark it yourself using the official mark scheme. Log every dropped mark by category (knowledge, technique, careless). Spend the remaining study time that week specifically on the categories where you dropped marks — not on the topics you enjoy or feel confident about. Confidence is not the same as weakness.
  2. Weeks 4–6: Increase to two papers per subject per week. Start doing question-type drilling — pull together every question of a specific type (e.g. every integration by parts question from Cambridge A-Level Maths, or every extract-based question from Edexcel IAL Economics Paper 2) and do them in sequence. You'll notice your speed and accuracy improve noticeably within a single session.
  3. Weeks 7–8: Full simulation mode. Sit papers under real exam conditions — same time of day as your actual exam if possible, phone in another room, no interruptions. Then review with brutal honesty. At this stage, you're not learning new things. You're building the exam muscle memory that will carry you through when nerves kick in on the day.

If you're finding specific subjects aren't moving despite your best efforts — if you've done the papers, read the examiner reports, drilled the question types and you're still dropping the same marks — that's when an online tutor who knows your specific syllabus and exam board makes an enormous difference. Not because you can't do it yourself, but because sometimes the feedback loop you need is a person pointing at your working and saying "there — that's the error pattern."

The Non-Obvious Insight: Stop Studying Your Strong Subjects

This sounds counterintuitive, so let me be precise. I don't mean abandon them entirely. I mean: if you are consistently scoring above your target grade in a subject through timed practice, the marginal return on additional hours in that subject is low. You are better served moving those hours to subjects where you are still below target.

I had a student last year — sharp kid, sitting Cambridge A-Levels in Maths, Physics, and Economics — who was spending sixty per cent of his revision time on Maths because he loved it and found it rewarding. His Economics was three grades below target. He genuinely hadn't noticed the imbalance because the Maths sessions felt productive. We restructured his time allocation based on the diagnostic data, gave Economics the bulk of his sessions for four weeks, and his final grade came in two full grades higher than his mock. The Maths stayed strong. It had enough residual practice to hold. The point is: exam strategy is resource allocation, and most students allocate resources emotionally rather than strategically.

What About University-Level and Postgraduate Exams?

Everything above applies to you too, with one addition: at university level, the mark scheme is often replaced by rubrics or marking criteria that reward synthesis across sources rather than recall of specific points. The diagnostic audit still works — look at your previous assessed work and identify whether you're losing marks for structure, for depth of argument, for insufficient referencing of theory, or for missing the question entirely. University exam preparation is often under-coached; students arrive from strong A-Level or IB backgrounds and assume the same approach will work. It mostly does, but faster writing under pressure and longer-form argument construction need specific practice. Past exam papers from your department are gold — use them.

Building Your Week: A Practical Template

One Sunday ritual I'd strongly recommend — and this is something that students I've worked with have consistently said was transformative — is the weekly review session. Every Sunday evening, spend twenty minutes doing just three things: review your performance on that week's past paper attempts, update your dropped-marks log, and set three specific technical targets for the coming week. Not "revise Chapter 5." Specific. "Nail the standard form of the equation of a circle." "Stop writing vague evaluation paragraphs in Economics — use specific data." Three targets. Written down. Reviewed the following Sunday.

It's boring. It's structured. It works. If you want a framework for this built into a proper study plan, you can explore our tutoring plans which include structured weekly review sessions with experienced tutors who know your specific curriculum.

The Part Nobody Talks About: Exam Week Itself

I'll leave you with this. Everything above is about the eight weeks leading up to exams. But the week of exams has its own strategy, and most students waste it by either over-cramming in a panic or doing nothing because they've convinced themselves nothing more can be done.

The night before each paper: one hour maximum, reviewing your key formula sheets, command word definitions, and the two or three technical areas that have been most troublesome. Then stop. Sleep is not optional — it's part of exam performance. The research on sleep consolidation and memory retrieval is unambiguous, and any student I've worked with who has sacrificed sleep for last-minute cramming has regretted it.

The morning of the exam: eat, arrive early, don't discuss the paper with classmates beforehand. Other people's pre-exam anxiety is contagious and serves no purpose. Go in calm, go in prepared, trust the work you've put in.

Eight weeks, done properly, is enough. Start today — not because you're running out of time, but because starting today means the work compounds. And compound interest, as every Economics student knows, is the most powerful force in any system.
